Something remarkable is unfolding in the mountains above our urban sprawl—something for the ages. Parcel by parcel, acre by acre, we have amassed the largest swath of protected open space of any major metropolis in the nation. Its a text-book example of collaboration between federal, state and local officials who worked hand-in-hand with grass roots groups dedicated to protecting the area from the kind of development that overtook the Hollywood Hills. Produced for Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky's website.

Wisdom Tree Hike, Cahuenga Peak and the Hollywood Sign.
The Wisdom Tree Hike is a short but strenuous trek up the steep and rugged Wonder View Trail to the somewhat iconic Wisdom Tree that sits alone atop Burbank Peak. By itself, it’s a superb short hike with about 740 feet of elevation gain in just 0.8 mile. But it’s an even better hike when combined with Cahuenga Peak and the Hollywood sign.

Elevation gain: 900 feet
Estimated trip time: 3 hours
Date Hiked: 8-13-16

Runyon Canyon Park is a 160-acre park in Los Angeles, California, at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains, managed by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. The southern entrance to the park is located at the north end of Fuller Avenue in Hollywood. The northern entrance is off the 7300 block of Mulholland Drive. The Runyon Canyon Road, a fire road that is closed to public motor vehicle access, runs roughly through the center of the park between the northern and southern entrances along Runyon Canyon itself, and there are numerous smaller hiking trails throughout the park. The highest point in the park at an elevation of 1,320 ft is known as Indian Rock. Because of its proximity to residential areas of Hollywood and the Hollywood Hills, celebrity sightings are common. The park is also noted for having a fairly liberal dog policy, with dogs allowed off-leash in 90 of the park's 160 acres

Dyana Carmella and Co-Host Jordan Sessions take on the Hollywood Hills with the end goal of reaching the backend of the Hollywood sign. The duo venture through the most well-know part of the Santa Monica Mountains. Aside from the backend of the Hollywood sign you'll see spectacular views from Mount Hollywood (the tallest point in the Hollywood Hills) which overlooks the Griffith Observatory and Downtown Los Angeles. If you live in Los Angeles, get out and wander these hills, they are incredible.

The Hollywood Sign hike is one of those iconic hikes that you need to do at least once. Not only will you hike to the Hollywood Sign, but you'll get some spectacular views of LA along the way.
When you’re planning your Hollywood Sign hike, I’d recommend doing it as early as possible. The hike gets very crowded. If you do go early, try to go on a day where there’s no marine layer (clouds).
The Hollywood Sign is on Mt Lee, which is on the edge (and within) Griffith Park. Griffith Park is LA’s version of Central Park in New York.
There are some steep sections on the hike, but thousands of people of all shapes and sizes hike to the Hollywood Sign, so you can too.
You actually hike up behind the Hollywood Sign. You get great views of most of LA and the big mountains to the east that separate LA from Palm Springs and the desert.
If you Google directions to the Hollywood Sign, you will be routed to the main part of Griffith Park, which is nowhere near the Hollywood Sign. That’s because the Hollywood Sign Trust worked with Google and Garmin to override any directions, bringing you miles away to a Hollywood Sign “viewing platform.” They did this because locals don’t like tourists walking through their neighborhood. Every trail in this guide is perfectly legal to hike on, all I ask is that you respect people’s private property.

Hike with Nick through Solstice Canyon up to nearly 1000' and an amazing Pacific Ocean view. On the way you'll visit the modern ruins of Malibu's oldest home...the 1865 Keller House. Before getting on the Sostomo trail you'll get the chance to explore the ruins of the Xanadu like Tropical Terrace where the Robertson's hired famed African-American architect Paul Williams to create their dream home. Exotic plants, hummingbirds, waterfalls, peculiar abandoned structures, and some of the freshest air in Southern California are all found on this hike!
I'm always trying to share different ways to get a work out in without feeling like its boring or like its an obligation. This is one of the best ways to push yourself while having fun with your friends, whether you can hike or just go to a beach or park to do something fun, getting a couple friends together to be active is the best way to go.
Nick hikes one of Los Angeles's most used trails in Hollywood's Runyon Canyon.
Whether you're burning off calories during your lunch break or spending a few hours with nature on the weekend, Runyon Canyon has what you need. Rich in history and teaming with plant life, Runyon Canyon welcomes you and your dog to a park where the sky is the limit and the views are breathtaking. Take in a yoga class or challenge your best time running the trails. It's all up to you at Runyon Canyon!
