In the first two decades of the twentieth century, hundreds of thousands of fossils were excavated from the Rancho La Brea Tar Pits. Prior to that time, these pits were unknown. When Spanish settlers first arrived in the area of Los Angeles in the eighteenth century, they found a number of tar springs located in the middle of a large plain at the foot of the Santa Monica Mountains.
Surrounding the springs was a scattering of animal bones visibly embedded within a layer of asphalt. It was not until the mid 1870s that people began to realize the remote antiquity of these bones. Soon after exploratory excavations began in the early 1900s, scientists were finding tar pits containing large numbers of fossils.
The conventional explanation for the occurrence of these fossils is that thirsty birds and mammals, deceived by water-filled pools of tar, had blundered into these viscous traps and died in them. Although widely accepted, the entrapment theory has failed to give convincing answers to some key questions, including the physical characteristics of tar pits, the fragmentation and chaotic intermingling of the bones, and the numerical preponderance of the carnivores. Since these issues cannot be resolved by the entrapment theory. The evidence seems to be pointing toward the possibility of flooding as the agent for fossil deposition at the La Brea Tar Pits.

Driving Mulholland Drive end to end. Then a brief journey into the heart of Encino.
HIKING / Santa Monica Mountains, Garapito, Bay Tree Trails Roads Less Traveled Off Mulholland
Mulholland Drive has long been a road to remember. "Fifty-five miles of scenic splendor" said its boosters when construction on the road began in 1924.
L.A.'s mountain highway has been featured in dozens of movie chase scenes. During the 1950s and '60s, it was a place to race and a place to park; some of the city's best-known "make-out" spots were Mulholland's scenic turnouts.
But Mulholland Drive is more than a link to the city's history; it appeals to today's traveler as well. The road offers a chance to explore the crests and canyons of the Santa Monica Mountains, from Universal City west to Leo Carrillo State Beach on the Ventura County line. En route are clear-day views of the San Fernando Valley to the north and Santa Monica Bay to the south. Motorists with an eye for architecture will gape at some of the amazing hillside haciendas, while geology buffs will find millions of years of mountain history revealed in the roadside cuts.
It's not all pretty, of course. Below many a "deadman's curve" are the rusting carcasses of abandoned autos. Litter mars the scenic turnouts, and has been dumped at the side of the road.

Jane Austen might never have imagined that her 1816 novel Emma could be turned into a fresh and satirical look at ultra-rich teenagers in a Beverly Hills high school. Cher (Alicia Silverstone) and Dionne (Stacey Dash), both named after "great singers of the past that now do infomercials," are pampered upper-class girls who care less about getting good grades than wearing the right clothes and being as popular as possible. But Cher, who lives with her tough yet warm-hearted lawyer dad (Dan Hedaya) and hunky, sensitive stepbrother (Paul Rudd), also has an innate urge to help those less fortunate, like the two introverted teachers she brings together ("negotiating" herself improved grades in the process) and new friend Tai (Brittany Murphy), who starts out a geek and ends up a Cher prodigy. Cher also possesses her own sensitive side, and she is looking for the perfect boyfriend, whom she ends up finding where she least expected.

The Hollywood Sign hike is one of those iconic hikes that you need to do at least once. Not only will you hike to the Hollywood Sign, but you'll get some spectacular views of LA along the way.
When you’re planning your Hollywood Sign hike, I’d recommend doing it as early as possible. The hike gets very crowded. If you do go early, try to go on a day where there’s no marine layer (clouds).
The Hollywood Sign is on Mt Lee, which is on the edge (and within) Griffith Park. Griffith Park is LA’s version of Central Park in New York.
There are some steep sections on the hike, but thousands of people of all shapes and sizes hike to the Hollywood Sign, so you can too.
You actually hike up behind the Hollywood Sign. You get great views of most of LA and the big mountains to the east that separate LA from Palm Springs and the desert.
If you Google directions to the Hollywood Sign, you will be routed to the main part of Griffith Park, which is nowhere near the Hollywood Sign. That’s because the Hollywood Sign Trust worked with Google and Garmin to override any directions, bringing you miles away to a Hollywood Sign “viewing platform.” They did this because locals don’t like tourists walking through their neighborhood. Every trail in this guide is perfectly legal to hike on, all I ask is that you respect people’s private property.

Griffith Observatory is a facility in Los Angeles, California sitting on the south-facing slope of Mount Hollywood in Los Angeles' Griffith Park. It commands a view of the Los Angeles Basin, including Downtown Los Angeles to the southeast, Hollywood to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the southwest. The observatory is a popular tourist attraction with an extensive array of space and science-related displays. Since the observatory opened in 1935, admission has been free, in accordance with Griffith's will.
3,015 acres (12.20 km2) of land surrounding the observatory was donated to the City of Los Angeles by Colonel Griffith J. Griffith on December 16, 1896.[1] In his will Griffith donated funds to build an observatory, exhibit hall, and planetarium on the donated land. Griffith's objective was to make astronomy accessible by the public, as opposed to the prevailing idea that observatories should be located on remote mountaintops and restricted to scientists.
Griffith drafted detailed specifications for the observatory. In drafting the plans, he consulted with Walter Adams, the future director of Mount Wilson Observatory, and George Ellery Hale, who founded (with Andrew Carnegie) the first astrophysical telescope in Los Angeles.
As a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project, construction began on June 20, 1933, using a design developed by architect John C. Austin based on preliminary sketches by Russell W. Porter. The observatory and accompanying exhibits were opened to the public on May 14, 1935. In its first five days of operation the observatory logged more than 13,000 visitors. Dinsmore Alter was the museum's director during its first years.
During World War II the planetarium was used to train pilots in celestial navigation. The planetarium was again used for this purpose in the 1960s to train Apollo program astronauts for the first lunar missions.
